Shawn Jones named Wellington Area Commissioner

Central Escarpment Council Commissioner Ruth Millard announced Monday the appointment of Shawn Jones as the next Area Commissioner for Wellington Area Scouts.

Currently a member of the 6th Guelph Scout Group and a member of the Area Management Team, Shawn will assume his new role as Area Commissioner on May 1st in preparation for the 2012/13 Scouting Season beginning September 1, 2012. He will be taking over from Harry Niezen who has held the role of interim Area Commissioner since September 2011.

“Harry has provided great leadership to the Area in his interim position” said Shawn when asked about his new position, “It’s my goal to continue the great work that Harry has started in the short time he has been with us.” Harry Niezen joined Wellington Area in an interim position in the fall of 2011 to allow the Area to do a search for the next Area Commissioner.

“I look forward to working with the many talented and committed Volunteers in Wellington who provide some of the most amazing opportunities for the youth in our area”, said Shawn. “I look forward to supporting them in their leadership roles”. When asked about his long term plans for the Area he stated, “My goal is to increase our visibility in the community and continue the strong growth we’ve seen recently in Wellington Area. Scouts Canada programming is some of the best anywhere and I want to make sure our community has the opportunity to participate. I am very proud of the opportunities we provide our youth to develop leadership qualities, become environmental stewards, and do their part to build strong communities”.

A local business owner, Mr Jones is a long time member of Scouting, joining over 25 years ago as a youth member and progressing through each of the sections to Venturers before becoming a Troop Leader with the 4th Meadowvale Scout Group in 1998. He moved to Guelph in 2000 to take over his current business, and moved his Scouting to became Troop Scouter for the 6th Guelph in 2007. He joined Wellington Area and the Central Escarpment Council in 2008 in the role of  Deputy Commissioner for Membership Development. Currently he is Group Commissioner and Troop Scouter with the 6th Guelph Scout Group, as well as retaining his Membership and Growth role, and as a member of the Executive Committee for Barber Scout Camp.
