Have you ever wondered what Beaveree, White Tail Fun Day, Kub Kars, Cuboree, Scout Competition camp or Moots were, or whether you could go to a meeting and find out when they were happening or how your section could attend? We have the answers to those questions, and many more.

Come out to our all-Leader get-together next Sunday evening, December 13th, at the Church of the Incarnation (corner of Dorval Drive and Old Abbey Lane), at 7:30 pm. Here is a wonderful opportunity to meet leaders from the other groups in town, renew acquaintances and welcome new people. After an introduction of your service team members, there will be separate “sessions” for Beaver Leaders, Cub Leaders, Scout Leaders and Senior Youth Leaders – a perfect forum for getting the answers you have been looking for, and helping plan the next events for your sections.

There will be a brief recap of any important information from Central Escarpment, at the end of the evening, followed by a time for social gathering and refreshments.

What we would like you to bring to this meeting are suggestions of who you think would make a great Area Commissioner. We are in the process of choosing a new one, and wish to get as much input from our leaders as possible.

We hope to see all of you next Sunday!

Group Commissioners Wood Badge I – Oakville

Friday, November 6th, 2009

This course is not held as often as Section training, but is available Nov 27th & 28th.  Location is the Oakville Town Hall at 1225 Trafalger Rd.  This training is critical for new (and, yes, for old) Group Commissioners.  Along with the basics of running your Group, you’ll find emphasis on the new Council/National directions and will include key Risk Management and VRAD training (which many will not have received in the past). It’s key, there is room, and you need it!  This is the last scheduled course until spring, come out now!  To register contact swmbo@bell.net or cec_training@scouts.ca .

Area/Group Commissioner Meeting Update

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

We had a great turnout for the meeting with 12 Groups represented, Godwin, Brenda, Denise, David and Ulla from the Area Team, Helen, Ruth and Tony from Council.

The Leadership Summit address by Steve Kent was presented followed by the Council 5-yr plan and the Oakville plan that has been developed so far.

The process to recruit a new Area Commissioner, Area Youth Commissioner and more Area Team members was discussed and it was decided that Godwin, Brenda and Denise would make up the nominating review committee to submit recommendations to the Council Commissioner for possible appointment. The review would be first to the review committee, then forwarded to Ed Balyk, Council Field Executive, then to the Council Commissioner.

A notice will be sent out to all leaders in Oakville looking for candidates. Ideally we will receive more than one person willing to stand for the role and if so, then GCs and Area team members will have some kind of process to indicate their preference. It was pointed out that the Area Commissioner is part of the Council team and this is an appointment process by the Council Commissioner.

One of the key priorities raised as a barrier to growth is facilities. Specifically new Durham schools won’t allow scouting and rental costs of the existing schools is exorbitant.

Repatriation of District funds back to the Area was discussed – this is on the agenda for the November 26th Council Meeting. Area funds are going to be used by the Area team for the Area and not distributed directly to Groups. Area Commissioners will decide the process of how and what the funds are to be used for within Areas. Group Commissioners were asked to provide ideas to the Area team.

One of the fundamental issues discussed is the concept of no-barriers to scouting. We are all part of the whole; we are not 8 Areas but One Council, all Oakville groups form the Area and it is part of the council and we need to have all groups participate as a team, not individuals and we must break down these walls and work together.

Oakville is hosting the Council Annual Reporting Meeting and the Area would like to hold skills workshops or other value added activities prior to the 1pm ARM.

If you have any ideas, would like to help or join the Area Team, please contact anyone from the team. Get involved, be part of the solution.

Everyone was challenged to write up deserving individuals for Awards, including all GCs to work on write-ups for each other as an example to get the process re-started. Laurie Romanica at the Council has offered to assist anyone in the area to help with this process.

An all leaders meeting is in the planning stages for early 2010.

Communications flow: any issues related to the following:
Administration – Brenda
Training – Denise
Program/Servicing – Godwin
Special Events/Fundraising – David
Marketing/Recruitment Events – Ulla
Council Team for support to the above
All Policy, Risk Management or other sensitive issues to call Tony

Great first steps to keep the Area moving forward with much work yet to be done, but as a team all working together to achieve our mission, we will succeed in delivering our mission and providing a fantastic program and learning opportunity to the youth of Oakville and beyond.

Youth Cannot Raise Funds for Other Organisations

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

Please remember that our Youth CANNOT participate in hands-on direct fundraising for other organizations (which includes the sale of any item).  This includes other non-profit organizations such as Cadets or the Legion, even if they are a Group Partner/Sponsor.  Your Area Commissioner has a polite standard letter which he/she/it will be happy to send out if you are faced with the problem and don’t want to do this yourself.  There can be no exceptions to this rule.  We are a not-for-profit volunteer organization and the rules are quite plain.

Metrolinx (GO Transit) is a GO for Apple Day

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

Pierre Laurin from our National Office has managed to reach an agreement with the GO Stations (Metrolinx) – with conditions that will allow us to fundraise on Apple Day at GO Stations.

At the locations noted on the attached Certificate of Insurance (please print a copy and have available in case you are asked for it or challenged, click -HERE- for a copy of the insurance form, -HERE- for a copy of the signed agreement), our members will be allowed on the sidewalks – however we are not allowed on the platform, in parking lots or on the roadway of the GO Stations.
