Somewhere around 375 Youth, 111 of their Leaders, and around 165 Offer of Service Volunteers are finally living at Camp Everton. With Camp opened by our Camp Chief (Tony Copperthwaite), and help from many, including the Dragon Dancers, events start in earnest today. First 3 busloads headed for the waterpark at Bingeman’s, everyone else at events in camp (rocketeering, orienteering, archery, I could go on). Hurry up and have fun, first day’s almost over!

For me, the week was a success when the first kid, moving at high-speed, said “The Dragon Dancers were awesome, got to go”, and yup, she was gone.

You’ll see a few pictures here, if you’re a parent, or volunteer from a Group attending, you can find the blog from the camp at http://ccj10.scouter.ca (and you already have your userid & password).

Truly an awesome group of Leaders and Volunteers!

Looking for something to do this weekend so you can ignore the heat? CCJ is only 2 1/2 weeks away, and need your help badly, as does the Everton Camp Committtee. If you’re even slightly handy, have time from Fri night through Sun (hey, you don’t have to show up for the whole thing, any time you have is good for us), we can sure use your help. We’re building, repairing, and cleaning. (Free) camping is available if you’re working, just be self contained and bring your own food and drink (pretty important on a warm day!). Bring your own hammer if you would. I’m sure Sat night will be pretty social, fun is where you find it! Questions? Just reply to the blog post. For Everton info, click -HERE-.

Dear Scouters,

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Greg Hunt as Deputy Council Commissioner – Community Development for the 2010/2011 scouting year, effective immediately.

Greg’s recent scouting experience was with the 31st Burlington A Company in 2005 followed by a couple years in the role of Group Commissioner before being appointed as Area Commissioner for Burlington in 2008.

Greg has done a great job growing scouting in Burlington and during his time as Area Commissioner, Greg has not only built a large, solid and diversified Area team, he has also made enormous inroads with the local governments especially the Mayor’s Office supporting Scouting on numerous fronts in the Area. Greg was instrumental in developing these relations with the City to the point that in October 2009 he presented Mayor Cam Jackson with Scouts Canada’s “Certificate of Commendation” for his exceptional and continuing support of Scouting throughout Ontario.

It is with this enthusiasm and talent that we look to Greg to develop this type of relationship between local Scouting and Mayors, Councilors, all levels of government and business leaders throughout the Council – open the doors and build foundations with each Area, their team and the communities we scout in.

I invite you to join me in welcoming Greg to this new Council role.

Yours in Scouting,

Tony Copperthwaite | Council Commissioner
Scouts Canada – Central Escarpment Council | “Growth through Program Excellence”

Hi everyone
Input needed…. Feel free to take a moment to share your thoughts. We need examples of first time experiences that youth can get through being a member of/participating in Scouting for all section levels (and some parent/leader ones would be ok too – just more focused on kids). Each example should specify for which section you are referring to (i.e., Beavers, Cubs, etc.), and provide some detail and context around the experience.
The experiences should not only focus on the things that might be considered the most exciting or challenging…. We want a good range or all the types of things that young people get to try out and experience for the first time while being in Scouting.
A couple of examples:

First time sleeping away from home (Beavers have sleepovers)

First time giving a speech (Cubs presenting badge work in front of the Pack)

Please send ideas and comments (by Friday May 15th if possible) to mjames@scouts.ca. Melissa will forward all input to the team that is conducting this marketing work for us.
Please feel free to share this message with others. The more input, the better!

Thanks!
