Speed River Challenge Raft Race – Results

 It’s run.  15 rafts fom 7 Groups.  Results as follows (trophies awarded):

Traditional

  1. 31st Guelph Venturers
  2. 6th Guelph Troop – ‘Aero’
  3. 26th Guelph Venturers

Non-standard

  1. 1st Guelph Firefighter Venturers

Other awards:

  • Best Workmanship – 29th Guelph Company
  • Best Design – 31st Guelph Company
  • Spirit of the Challenge – 1st Elmira Company

This year we also had 2 stoves as prizes, one for Troop, one for Venturers. It was awarded based on Group participation, not individual rafts.  Judges were David Barnett (N. Waterloo Area Commissioner), Denise Powell (Oakville Area Commissioner) and Conrad Knabenschuh (Wellington Area Commissioner).

  • For Troop – 6th Guelph, with 5 rafts entered, one of which took 2nd place overall with 73 points between them. The next closest Troop was the 17th Guelph with 31 points between their 2 rafts.  Others of course… 
  • For Venturers – 1st Guelph Firefighters, who ended up with 28 points beating the 1st Elmira ‘Destroyer’ raft by 1 point.   Others were: 26th Guelph with 26 points, 29th Guelph with 24 points, & the 31st Venturers with 23 points, There were more of course.  Great effort and many rafts with very close scores.

Participation this year was from the 1st Guelph Firefighter Company, 6th Guelph Troop, 17th Guelph Troop & Company, 29th Guelph Troop and Company, 26th Guelph Company, 1st Elmira Company, and 31st Guelph Company (in no particular order). Thank you to those who participated!  Thanks to Gerry Carr for organizing this year’s race; the 1st Firefighters Company who played safety boat when our pre-arranged canoe didn’t show up :-( though the crew did :-)  ; the judges; and Albert Fuchigami for playing photographer.

Guelph Multi-Cultural Festival – needs 10 volunteers urgently

For those in Wellington, you know we run the raft races on Sat morning as a kickoff for the festival.  They are still looking for help. If you work a shift, it includes both food & a t-shirt.  If you have some time on Sat or Sun, why don’t you?  Reply to info@gdmf.ca volunteering.  Believe me, you’ll be welcomed with open arms!

Speed River Challenge Raft Race 2010

Calling all Troops (and Venturers too).  As we have annually for at least 8 years, Wellington will be holding it’s annual raft race on the mighty Speed River (behind the bandshell, enter off Woodlawn) on Sat Jun 12th.  Click -HERE- for the full flyer with rules, regs and contact info.  There are two classes, one for Troop using standard materials, and proper Scout lashings :-) , the other unlimited using anything you wish.  This year we are the OPENING EVENT for the Guelph Multi-Cultural Festival, so we NEED YOUR RAFTS.  At $5/entry, and no limit on the number of entries, come out and get wet!  It’s been awesome fun before, and we’re counting on that again this year!  The winning Troop will also win a 2 burner Coleman stove; Company a stove with grill; as well as the trophy & bragging rights of course.  Finally, a prize worth of winning!!!

Chief Scout, Queen’s Venturer – Deadline for applications April 30th!

For those of you attending, this year’s Youth Recognition Ceremony is being hosted by Wellington Area, at War Memorial Hall on the University of Guelph campus, at 1pm on Sun Jun 13th. More details to come of course, however, the deadline for applications is only 2 days away!  Remember, these must be signed by your Area Commissioner, then forwarded to the COAC office immediately in order to get there in time!

Youth Wanted! – World Jamboree 2011

  • When – Sun, Aug 8th to Sun Aug 15th (8 days)
  • Location – The North Channel (Owen Sound to Tobermory, ON)
  • Scout Cost – $830 includes all meals, lodging and transportation to and from the ship (this represents a $170 savings over the regular price)

Appointment of new Council Youth Commissioner

On behalf of Scouts Canada, Central Escarpment Council, I am pleased to announce the appointment of Andrew Wyszynski to the position of Council Youth Commissioner effective immediately.

Andrew started scouting as a Beaver, progressed through the sections to now being a Rover, during this time he received his 6 Star Award, Chief Scouts Award, Queens Venturer Award, Medal of the Maple and has taken his WBI in Pack, Troop and the Commissioner course in addition to FOCUS Training.

Andrew has volunteered at various levels outside of sections, including Atironta Region Group Youth Representative, North Waterloo Area 75th Anniversary Camp Co-Chair, Area Youth Commissioner, North Waterloo and countless other camps and  activities. He is currently active with the MedRovers, Region of Waterloo EMS program and the 14th Waterloo Rover Crew.

Please join me in welcoming Andrew Wyszynski to the National Team as Council Youth Commissioner for Central Escarpment.

Scouter’s Conference – Sat Mar 27 – 9am to 4pm

Greater Toronto Council is sponsoring a Scouter’s Conference.  See a year’s worth of programming in one room.  Many sessions to choose from including geocaching, Outdoor Cooking, Camping with Beavers, Lightweight Backpacking, and more. Cost $20 in advance before Mar 20th or $25 at the door. The conference is open to older Scouts, Guides, members of Scouts Canada and Grirl Guides, and interested parents that may become leaders.
